Office® 2013 Tip of the Month – Hiding the Command Ribbon to Get More Space in Word®

The command ribbon at the top of Microsoft Word® provides easy access to many popular formatting commands. But there are times when you want to view more of a document and the ribbon is taking up too much space on the page. Here is one way to remove ribbon:

  • First, find and click on the icon with an upward arrow inside of a rectangle; you can find the icon in the top-right corner of an Office window. When you click the icon, it opens up a pull-down menu showing three options—Auto-hide Ribbon, Show Tabs, and Show Tabs and Commands.
  • If you want the entire ribbon to disappear so your document fills the screen, then choose the Auto-hide Ribbon option. When you need to peek at the ribbon again, move your mouse to the top of the screen and click when a shaded stripe appears.
  • If you want to retain only the main headings (such as File, Home, View, and Page Layout) of the command ribbon visible at all times while hiding everything else, select Show Tabs.
